Neurology Clerkship
After some time off from medical school due to coming down with mononucleosis and taking time off for residency interviews, I was back in school and immersed in clinical rotations. It was back to cramming parenthood, clinical responsibilities and studying all into one day!
Neurology is a three-week rotation and has a mix of inpatient and outpatient neurology. I was placed on the outpatient portion of the rotation and spent most of my days rotating within sub specialty clinics under the larger clinical umbrella of neurology. I spent a few days in the headache clinic, a few days with epilepsy specialist, multiple sclerosis specialists, physicians who specialize in movement disorders, and finally some time with general neurologists. I also spent an evening on stroke call, where we assessed the youngest looking 100+ year old I had ever laid eyes on! Life goals.
My hours were primarily daytime hours, and I was able to make it home at a decent time each night, but I was exhausted after a day learning everything first time in clinic. In the evening I had enough energy to make dinner and study for a few very brief moments and crawl into bed. It was a whirlwind of a clerkship, but of course I managed to sneak in some family adventures, dinner with our friends and enjoyable evenings and weekends. It's all about integrating the different aspects of your life! Drew moved into his toddler bed, after 3+ years in his pack and play. Paul had a week of vacation sprinkled in and got eye surgery - so it was a busy time!
My required rotations are winding down, just a few more left before match day! Speaking of match day... my next task is to fill you all in about that this residency selection process is all about!
